Burtons Bio Tube Media High surface area biological filter media designed for moving bed pond filtration systems. Burtons Bio Tube Media is a high efficiency biological filter media designed specifically for moving bed filtration systems and biological filter chambers. Its unique spoke style design features internal and external fins which create a large protected surface area where beneficial bacteria can colonise and thrive. Beneficial bacteria are essential for maintaining healthy pond water. These microorganisms convert harmful ammonia and nitrite produced by fish waste and organic debris into less harmful compounds. By providing a large protected surface area for bacterial growth, Burtons Bio Tube Media supports efficient biological filtration and helps maintain stable water conditions in ponds and aquatic systems. With a surface area of approximately 1000 square metres per cubic metre, this media allows dense bacterial colonies to develop. As a result, filtration systems can process higher levels of waste while maintaining clear and healthy pond water. Burtons Bio Tube Media is manufactured from durable polypropylene with a specific gravity of 0.97. This allows the media to remain suspended and tumble freely within moving bed filtration systems, ensuring continuous contact between the biofilm and oxygen rich water. The media is suitable for koi ponds, ornamental ponds, aquaculture systems and aquariums where reliable biological filtration is required. Designed for Moving Bed Filtration Burtons Bio Tube Media is designed primarily for moving bed filtration systems such as Burtons Bio Chambers and other biological filter tanks. The lightweight media remains suspended in the water where it tumbles freely within the filter chamber. This constant movement keeps the bacterial biofilm active while preventing debris from clogging the media. Bio Tube Media also works particularly well when used alongside Burtons Bio Flo media. Because the two media types have slightly different shapes, they gently collide and bounce against each other as they circulate within the chamber. This increases the tumbling or boiling motion of the media, improving circulation and oxygen distribution throughout the filter. As a result, beneficial bacteria remain highly active and the biofilm naturally stays thin and efficient. Burtons often recommends using approximately a 50 percent mix of Bio Tube Media and Bio Flo Media within biological chambers to maximise filtration performance. Maximum Protected Surface Area The spoke design of Bio Tube Media includes both internal and external fins which significantly increase the available surface area for beneficial bacteria. Much of this surface area is protected from direct turbulence, allowing bacteria to remain attached even when the media moves vigorously within the filter chamber. This protected structure increases the overall biomass concentration within the filter, improving the efficiency of biological filtration and helping maintain stable water quality. Excellent Water Flow and Low Clogging Burtons Bio Tube Media features large open channels which allow water to pass freely through the media. This design creates a voidage of approximately 80 percent, ensuring excellent water flow through the filter while preventing debris build up and clogging. The open structure helps maintain a thin and highly active biofilm layer which supports efficient biological filtration.
